Sustainable futures require long-term environmental health, social well-being, and economic resilience, as framed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet progress toward these goals is increasingly threatened by climate change, resource scarcity, ecosystem degradation, and rising inequalities—challenges that often surpass the capacity of traditional policy and decision-making frameworks. 

Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential to accelerate sustainable development. Through advanced data analysis, real-time monitoring, and predictive modeling, AI can enhance resource efficiency, support climate mitigation, enable sustainable urban planning, and foster inclusive economic growth across multiple SDGs. At the same time, its deployment raises important concerns, including high energy consumption, algorithmic bias, data inequities, and governance gaps, all of which must be addressed to ensure responsible and equitable outcomes. 

This Collection brings together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to examine both the opportunities and challenges of AI for sustainability. We invite contributions that showcase innovative AI applications across environmental, social, economic, and technological domains, while also engaging with the ethical and policy considerations crucial for the responsible advancement of sustainable futures. 

Contributions to this Collection are expected to highlight the role of artificial intelligence in addressing sustainability-related challenges, through the development, adaptation, or careful evaluation of AI-based methods and approaches. Interdisciplinary studies are welcome, provided that artificial intelligence represents a central and clearly articulated component of the research.
