Senior Professor of Physical Chemistry & Sustainable & Efficient Energy at Univ. of Siena, Italy; MUR Delegate for the SET (Strategic Energy Technology) Plan EU. Senior Expert for Energy and in Mission Innovation inter-ministerial Task Force. Since 2017 Member and since 2021 Vice President of the National Techno-Scientific Council of ENEA. From 2013 Italian Permanent Representative in Energy Committee of HORIZON 2020. 

Previously Deputy Rector for Energy at University of Siena from 1995 to 2017. Scientific Advisor of Italian Presidency of Minister Council (2007–08). Advisor for Energy of MIUR Ministry at G7 (Berlin 2015, Kyoto 2016 and Torino 2017). Member of Technical Table of Presidency of Minister Council on "De-carbonization of Italian Economy" 2015–2017. National Expert for IEA/EGRD. 

Author of more than 300 papers in international journals on physical chemistry, energy & sustainability. Active on research on LCA of Energy Processes and Complex Systems. Member of Editorial Board of Quale Energia (since 2000), Int. Journal of Energy & Technology (since 2009), Int. Journal of Solar Energy Research since 2016, Guest Editor EES (Energy Policy 2017, Energy 2018), Sustainability 2019, Highlights of Sustainability 2021.

Recipient of 2014 SCI Gold Medal for excellent achievements in the field of energy and environment. Co-recipient of the World Energy Globe Award 2014. Chairman of the VIII SET Plan Conference in the frame of Italian EU Presidency, Dec 2014.
